A Beginning Not an EndingIt was a great run. St. Louis politics will never be the same. For the first time ever, a candidate won the city without a single ward endorsement. Everybody in the State Party is stunned by how close we came, and most regret that they did not do more to help us. Fortunately, there are moral victories in this world. We are nowhere near vanquished. Most of us will go on to help defeat Bush, working in swing states like Missouri and Florida. Jeff's political stock has increased immensely. And all of us are better, stronger, and wiser people from this experience. And YOU, all of you have participated in a hopeful, energetic campaign for substantial change. You all know what we can accomplish if we work together. You will carry this torch as well. So, we won't say goodbye. We will be here fighting the good fight for years to come and we expect to work with you again. But we must say "Thank You" again to all of you who supported us in so many ways. We will never forget you. We started this campaign with a few current and former students devoted to their teacher and friend. You didn't have to believe in us, but you did. You all had the courage to deny cynicism and follow your hearts. That courage defines this campaign and it will define a movement for years to come. Finally, Jeff asked that we attempt to express the awe he felt on election night when 400 or so people filled our office to cheer us on. He said that when he stood up to speak, he felt something stronger than he had ever felt, an overwhelming sense of hope that will stay with him forever. Many of us felt it, too. It will stay with us, grow inside of us, and motivate the renewal of our country. Thank you for being a part of this. We will never forget you. Always with you in the fight, The JEFF SMITH Team
